9mm Pistol (Fallout: New Vegas)

FO76 publicteam xpd.pngFor an overview of the topic, see 9mm pistol.

The 9mm Pistol is a weapon in Fallout: New Vegas.

Background

It is manufactured by M&A Guns Manufacturers[1].

Gameplay

The 9mm Pistol is one of the most common guns to be found early on. It is very cheap to buy, utilizes very common ammunition, has no Guns skill requirement, and has a very low Strength requirement in order to be handled effectively. It has three-dot luminescent front and rear iron-sights for better low-light fighting, and a minor idle sway.

It can be modified with a short range scope and an extended magazine to further improve its performance. Furthermore, it is considered an improved holdout weapon, and can therefore be concealed with a Sneak skill of 50 or greater.

Durability

The 9mm Pistol can fire about 745 standard rounds, the equivalent of 58 reloads, or 38 reloads when modded with extended magazines, from full condition before breaking.

Behind the scenes

According to Joshua Sawyer, the weapon was modeled after the "timeless design" of the 9mm Browning Hi-Power, with its form being "quite distinctive when compared to Fallout's 10mm pistols."[Dev 1]

Bugs

  • Playstation 3Playstation 3 Xbox 360Xbox 360 Sometimes when aiming through the 9mm Pistol Scope in first person, it will show the scope crosshairs, but will have the pistol model in front of the crosshairs, as if aiming down the iron sights. It does not affect firing, but makes it difficult to aim.
  • PCPC Playstation 3Playstation 3 Xbox 360Xbox 360 If loading a saved game from the main menu in which the 9mm Pistol is equipped and drawn, the reload animation takes twice as long as normal. This can be solved by simply switching to another gun and then back again.

Developer Statements
  1. Question: "If 12.7mm is suppose to be like .50 A/E, than why not name it as such? Also, was the BHP chosen for the 9mm pistol out of personal preference or another reason? I gotta say it's nice seeing a dev. who's very knowledgeable about firearms and ammunition."
Joshua Sawyer: "[...] In my opinion, the BHP is a timeless design and its form is quite distinctive when compared to Fallout's 10mm pistols. Also, since I knew we weren't going to implement an M1911-style .45, the BHP-based 9mm design gives an extremely similar aesthetic (so similar that a lot of people assume it IS an M1911) while fitting into the 9mm/10mm/12.7mm semi-auto handgun progression in F:NV.
