This tutorial lists the steps needed for using xTranslator, a program that allows for searching for and transcribing text from Fallout games, including Fallout 3, Fallout 4, Fallout: New Vegas, and Fallout 76. Note that Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas may be combined under New Vegas.
Download
Download xTranslator from NexusMods. Once you've done that and extracted it, as long as you have the game installed, it should be able to automatically detect the locations of the game files.
Extract
- Extract the downloaded zip file to a folder of your choosing.
- Open xTranslator.exe.
Games
When it opens it will give you an option for different games (Skyrim, SkyrimSE, Fallout4, FalloutNV, Fallout76). Select the game you wish to have it start up as. You can switch games on the fly once it's open by going into the "Options" menu and selecting "Restart for 'game'".
Languages
- Once you've selected your game you will be greeted with the "Dictionary and languages" options window. If the ".\data folder" text box looks correct, you can just click the okay button to continue.
- If for some reason the data folder doesn't load, click the text box next to ".\data folder" and navigate to the game's location on your computer and go into the "Data" folder of that game. This will set the data and strings folders correctly.
Select .esm
- Once at the main screen click "File" -> "Load Esp/Esm" and select all the esms from the game.
Toggle list
- After loading the esms you will have a screen that shows 3 tabs above the main list window. Click the button labeled "Toggle list view mode" in the example to the right. This will combine all the strings windows into one for easier navigation.
- If you need to switch to a different DLC, you can click the dropdown in the top right to change that.
- If you know a word or phrase you are looking for you can type it into the search box and the list will filter automatically. If the search box isn't working you can click the "Advanced Search" button to the left of the search box and use that to search instead.
Startup option
Optionally if you want to be able to select which game every time you open xTranslator, you can go into the "Options" menu -> "Startup" -> "Always ask at startup".
