Swampfolk have no organized society or creed, but seem to mark their territory with totems of wood, bones and dolls.Fallout 3 loading screen, Point Lookout

Swampfolk Trackers are a type of mutated human in the Fallout 3 add-on Point Lookout.

Background

Publications

Although Point Lookout did not suffer a direct hit during the Great War, the radioactive fallout can be seen in the indigenous population that have slowly devolved over the decades, and now sport the “Point Lookout look.” Sporting sinewy, pockmarked bodies oozing with strength and pus, the Swampfolk are a violent and stupid bunch, and they don’t take well to strangers. They have a rudimentary belief system, and mark their territory (which is everywhere north and west of Point Lookout Township) with fetishes: straw dolls hanging from trees and bone totems. Anthropologists have speculated the Swampfolk have a belief in the occult, and some postulate they pray to a hitherto unknown entity named Ug-Qualtoth. Frighteningly strong, and ferociously territorial, they are among the most dangerous adversaries you may face.Fallout 3 Official Game Guide/Faction profiles
Don’t assume combat with these Yokels is going to be easy. The stronger types seem to shrug off the Dart Gun’s leg-crippling, and they attack in groups. Concentrate your attacks on the closest foe, back up into partial cover, and choose specific weaponry based on the distance to the foe you’re attacking.Fallout 3 Official Game Guide/Faction profiles

Gameplay

Swampfolk Trackers lack ranged attacks and engage only in melee combat and use axes. Like the Swampfolk Bruisers, even when their axe is unequipped, they can still inflict large amounts of damage with only their fists, and have an even higher unarmed damage rating than Deathclaws. They also punch very fast, making blocking very difficult. Trackers are not strongly affected by the Dart Gun, as even after having their legs crippled they can still run at close to their normal speed.

Bugs

  • PCPC Playstation 3Playstation 3 Xbox 360Xbox 360 One specific scrapper, creeper or bruiser near the Ritual Site will spawn one Frag Grenade every 30 seconds as long as you stay in the same cell as the dead swampfolk.
  • PCPC Playstation 3Playstation 3 Xbox 360Xbox 360 Swampfolk may be targeted in V.A.T.S., after exiting, the swampfolk may spawn several feet in front of you.

Notes

  • Swampfolk are registered as creatures (part of the super mutant faction) in the G.E.C.K. and function like Point Lookout's version of super mutants. They also make the same walking sound as a super mutant, even the smaller ones such as the creepers and scrappers.
  • The Swampfolk mark their territory with hanging dolls and other fetishes.[Pub 1]
  • Some Swampfolk may carry Human Flesh.
  • Swampfolk can sometimes be observed dancing around Beachview Campsite, but nowhere else on Point Lookout.
  • Kenny was born to Swampfolk parents, but lacked their deformities and thus became an outcast.[1][Pub 2]
  • Marguerite lives in the bog with the Swampfolk. While she lacks severe deformities, she is still considered to be a local by others.[Pub 3]
  • Haley was not born looking like one of the Swampfolk, but he is believed to be a local and does some trading with them.[Pub 4] He notes that Swampfolk tend to smell.[2]

Behind the scenes

  • Placeholder sound files for female swampfolk (DLC04femaleyokel) are found in the game files.
  • During development of Point Lookout, the original plan was for the swampfolk to be a single model and the production and animation of that model would be outsourced to another studio.[Dev 1] Three concepts were drafted for what was supposed to be the only new character type in Point Lookout, but due to a communication mishap, all three designs were shared with the outsourced studio and created. This was not caught until all the work was completed on the models and animations.[Dev 2]
  • The swampfolk take inspiration from the films The Hills Have Eyes and an "ironic take" on the movie Deliverance.[Dev 3]
  • Occasionally, if the player hides, the swampfolk may utter the phrase "Ollie Ollie Oxen Free," a euphemism commonly used by children during hide-and-seek games to end a game that either has taken unusually longer than was ideal, or the seeker has simply given up. In this case, the swampfolk are saying this to draw the Lone Wanderer out of hiding.

  1. Lone Wanderer: "What do you mean, you weren't "born right"?"
Kenny: "Look at me. I don't got the marks. I go around the wets and folk will shoot at me! Thinking I was one of your type."
    (Kenny's Dialogue)
  2. Lone Wanderer: "Do I make you nervous?"
Haley: "No, no. Not at all! I'm just not used to people all the way out here. My usual customers, well. I usually smell 'em before I see 'em."
