Mirelurks are creatures living throughout the wastelands.

Background

Mirelurks are hostile creatures. Ada mentions the mirelurk is an irradiated, "hyper-evolved horseshoe crab" that functions in a caste-like system.[1][2] Moira Brown classified them as Scylla Serrata Horrendus and questioned if they had evolved from crabs or some sort of brine shrimp.[3][4] John Hancock states that mirelurks were much smaller before the bombs dropped.[5] Porter Gage refers to mirelurks as "mudcrabs."[6]

Mirelurks nesting below inhabited decks are considered a nuisance for inhabitants of Rivet City, regularly exterminated by the city's security team.[7] They lay eggs in small clutches and grow quickly, used as food and traded throughout the wasteland.[8][9][10] Mirelurks are sensitive towards high pitched noises, such as those occurring in Vault 92 and on Spectacle Island. Mirelurks are heavily armored and resistant to most forms of damage, but their faces are vulnerable.[11][12] Mirelurk kings have the ability to cloak themselves in order to ambush unsuspecting prey.[13]

Behind the scenes

The mirelurks got a bit of a reboot visually, as well as significant expansion on the variants with the addition of the hunter and the queen. This was simply a case of wanting to try something a bit more animalistic and to move away from the guy-in-a-suit vibe of the original. The Art of Fallout 4, p. 190
The mirelurk queen was added late into development, creating another large enemy to encounter, specifically for the coastal regions of the Commonwealth. The Art of Fallout 4, p. 195
I made the Fallout 3's Mirelurk to resemble an old rubber-costumed monster (that was sort of the prompt, to go along with the pulpy 1950s schtick), but I was never entirely happy with my result. The Fallout 4 ones are just far more realistic, far more original in shape (Ilya Nazarov did a fantastic job with the concept), and better over-all additions than in Fallout 3.Jonah Lobe on Reddit (Archived)

Some of these observations about their armor and camouflage gave me an idea for reinforced, neutral-colored headgear. Here, consider it thanks for not interfering with them. Oh, speaking of which, take these. So you can continue to avoid them in the future."
