The National Energy Technology Laboratory was a division of the pre-War United States Department of Energy.

Background

The Department of Energy was a cabinet-level institution that held the utmost power regarding policies of safe handling of nuclear waste and other potentially hazardous material. One of the divisions of the agency was the National Energy Technology Laboratory, which handled the project regarding the mining of uranium ore at Blackwater Mine. Spearheaded by Dr. Phillip Cotton, the laboratory used Blackwater Mine as a test case for the automation of mining.
