The New California Republic Rangers are a part of the New California Republic. They are a volunteer contingent described as "renowned for their expert reconnaissance capabilities."[1] Their primary purpose is dealing with threats regular forces cannot handle, as well as keeping the borders of the NCR secure, scouting out threats and other special assignments.[2]
Background
Under the leadership of the First Ranger, Seth, the group was charged with abolishing slavery.[3][4] Since their founding, their numbers have grown, assisting the NCR army in covering ground and handling threats on both sides of the Colorado River.[5][6][7]
Training for the Rangers is difficult, and 8 out of 10 potential rangers do not succeed.[8] They are considered reliable and the officers of the NCR Army depend on them for assistance with challenging initiatives.[9] The Rangers are an all-volunteer force that recruit members.[10] The Rangers draw from the NCR army, inviting those who show exceptional skill at fighting and scouting to the training.[11] Ranger ranks include humans, ghouls, and super mutants. Veterans who served 20 years are given a Ranger Sequoia that features inscriptions reading "For Honorable Service," "20 years," and "Against All Tyrants."[12] NCR troopers believe they "chew nails and spit napalm" and members of Caesar's Legion call them "the best the profligates have to offer."
Rangers wear reinforced combat armor with badges on the chest and use fully automatic combat shotguns, flamers and miniguns.[13] In the Mojave, Rangers wear black combat armor consisting of a trench coat worn with pre-War riot armor and ranger patrol armor, hand-manufactured in the NCR.[14] Ranger combat helmets are also old pre-War military gear that has built in low-light optics.[15]
Ranger Unification
The Ranger Unification Treaty was an agreement signed between the New California Republic and the Desert Rangers of Nevada in 2271 at the Mojave Outpost.[16] Under the treaty, the Desert Rangers were absorbed into the New California Republic Rangers. In return, the New California Republic would protect the Hoover Dam, New Vegas, and southern portions of Nevada against the forces of the Caesar's Legion.[16][17] A monument was erected at the Mojave Outpost to commemorate the signing of the treaty.[18]
Hoover Dam
In 2277, the Rangers were part of the force against Caesar's Legion at Hoover Dam. Under the command of Chief Hanlon, the Rangers laid a trap for the Legion in Boulder City, securing victory for the Republic.[19] The Rangers were credited with the victory, causing conflict with the NCR army commander, General Lee Oliver.[20] The Boulder City Memorial commemorates the service members including Rangers who lost their lives during the battle.
The New California Republic Senate controls the funding for Ranger initiatives, and they are commanded by President Kimball.[21] Administration has sent veterans to Baja, stretching the support in the Mojave thin, and Chief Hanlon describes the future of the Rangers as "looking east."[22] Hanlon also expresses concern about the upcoming Second Battle of Hoover Dam, expressing continued conflict with General Oliver regarding troop deployments and strategy.[20]

After a campaign in which he denounced Oliver's and Kimball's hawkish, imperialist ways, Hanlon was elected as the senator of Redding. |
