Suspended Animation

(Redirected from Cryoscience)

Suspended Animation is the process in which individuals slow down vital functions in living beings with low temperatures, stasis tanks or other methods for the purposes of preserving them and keeping them alive for extended periods of time.

Biomed Gel

Main article: Biomed Gel

Preservation and replacement involve the bio med gel being "cooked" so as to clear up any contamination the gel may have sustained during its time in storage, needing reactivation, or "sizzling" to reactivate brain function.[1] The gel cost approximately $1000 per pint.[2]

Bio med gel has alternative medical capabilities outside of its use for transplanted organic brains, as bio gel can also be used to regenerate injuries to damaged limbs and organs, as well as preserve them.[3] This was seen with General Clifton's eye, which had been regenerated perfectly, and was able to bypass a retinal scanner.

Private First Class Dobbs was killed in battle but taken to Sierra Army Depot VI and submerged in this gel in order to experiment with its regeneration effects. It kept him alive, allowing him to be subsequently brought back to life. He then died due to Post-Cryogenic Syndrome which causes patients to completely dissolve once removed from the gel.[4] It can only keep tissue preserved for so long before corrosive degradation occurs.[5][6]

A cyberdog named Rex experiences brain degeneration due to the length of time it has been preserved in biogel. If a brain replacement is not found in time for a brain-assisted robot, the brain eventually dies ceasing the function of the machine.[7]

Cryogenic Pods

Main article: Cryogenic Pod

In Vault 111, the Sole Survivor and Neighbors are escorted to the pods and told they are undergoing a decontamination process before progressing farther into the vault.[8] Afterward, the cyro sequence is initiated and the inhabitants are put into stasis. When Kellogg returns to kidnap Shaun, the scientists open the spouse's pod in order to do so, and then refreeze the Sole Survivor. The rest of the occupants died due to asphyxiation when the life support to the pods failed.[9]

Vault 31

>>
Main article: Bud's Buds

Vault 31 was part of an experiment involving cryopods. Executives are cryogenically frozen in Vault 31 and utilized as overseers of Vault 33. Vaults 32 and 33 serve as the breeding pool, genetically selected to breed with Bud's Buds to create a class of super managers.

Vault 4

>>
Main article: Cryo-Tec

In Vault 4, the experiment involved an attempt to breed humans with radiation-resistant creatures. Pregnant individuals are kept in Cryo-Tec pods on Level 12 of the Vault.

Cryo Tanks

As part of the Vault 111 experiment, Cryogenic Pods were supported by tanks in an adjacent room.

Cryo-Technology

Before the Great War, companies and government agencies produced cryo-technology. The Massachusetts Surgical Journal titled an issue "Cryo-Technology: Haven or Tomb?"

They are cryogenic pods[10] designed to keep living beings alive for long periods of time. The tubes are filled with an oxygen compound to sustain them[11]. They can be found in the Cryo storage section of Mothership Zeta.

Vault 96 Cryogenic Pods

Vault 96 cryo pods were designed to hold animal subjects using helium [12]. There were 86 Cryogenics Bays in the Vault.[13]

Before the Great War, Vault 96 housed approximately 10,000 species in cryonic bays, such as beavers.[14]

Brain Tank: "[SUCCEEDED] Of course I accounted for that! Do you think I'm so stupid... no, you're right. Maintaining my current functionality will be harder than I thought. This bears some further looking into."

Doctor Henry: "It's neural degradation. Bio med gel can only preserve a living brain for so long, so you'll need to find a replacement. I haven't left Jacobstown in years, but there was one woman in Novac... Gibson? I remember her living with a pack of hounds. Aside from her, I know that the Fiends and Caesar's Legion fight alongside dogs. There could be viable specimens among them, if you can get to them."

Elijah: "Big Empty's a treasure box, a scientific graveyard of Old World misery. Like the Sierra Madre... there's treasures there, sleeping. Some, awake. The Holorifle, the Saturnite alloy... the hologram technology, hibernation chambers, Securitrons, the collars... ...even the suits attached to those things stalking the Villa... that's only the surface of what's there. Right now, the Sierra Madre is what I want."
