Abstract	Fallout: Factions is a skirmish-level wargame for two players, where you take control of Wastelanders vying for power in an irradiated hellscape, full to bursting with monsters, mercenaries, and murderous miscreants – all doing exactly the same. Over the course of several games, crews will rise and fall, each moving through their own stories thanks to an intricate Campaign system. On the tabletop, players control a unique group of miniatures, representing a core Faction from the Fallout universe, and bring them to battle the crews of other players in a fast-paced, dice-hurling, action-packed skirmish wargame – where every action can have long-lasting consequences. Grow your unique Leaders and Champions into veritable Legends of the Wasteland, or hire on renowned and recognisable characters to tame the battlefield; use every dirty trick you can to make sure that, when the sun sets on the rad-blasted landscape, it’s setting with you standing tall. Played over a 2x3 ft. battlefield, Factions promises quick and engaging gameplay, where no two fights ever turn out the same way. With a host of free online content to supplement and expand your games, the possibilities – and perils – are endless.

Fallout: Factions is a skirmish wargame developed by Modiphius Entertainment and published by Bethesda Softworks. It was announced on September 10, 2022 and released in 2024. It is the 17th installment in the Fallout Series, following the Fallout Television Series.

Background

Fallout: Factions was designed by industry veteran James Hewitt, who had previously worked other tabletop games such as Hellboy: The Board Game, Necromunda and Adeptus Titanicus.

Fallout: Factions is a skirmish-level wargame for two players. On the tabletop, players control a unique group of miniatures, representing a core Faction from the Fallout universe, and bring them to battle the crews of other players. It is played over a 2x3 ft. paper battlefield.

Gameplay

“Fallout: Factions is an action-packed two-player competitive tabletop skirmish game where players each command a Crew of hardened Wasteland warriors. The full game is, of course, based on the genre-defining video games from Bethesda.

In Fallout: Factions, you and your opponent will fight it out on your tabletop, making tactical decisions and relying on dice rolls to determine the outcome of your attacks. Each time you play, you tell the next chapter of your Crew’s story, charting their journey from wide-eyed nobodies to Wasteland Legends!

The game utilizes standard ten-sided dice and 32mm scale miniatures, the latter of which is compatible for use in Fallout: Wasteland Warfare.”

Development

Announcement & Release

During ModCon 2022 on September 10, 2022, the game was first announced. On September 14, 2023, an email newsletter was sent out to announce a YouTube Premiere that would demonstrate gameplay, which premiered the following day and featured Steve Daldry and James Hewitt playing against each other. On September 15, 2023, an additional newsletter was sent out to announce the game's 2024 release date, as well as noting that it would appear at ModCon 2023, Modiphius' online showcase, on September 23, 2023.
