They're lowlife scum who decided to use Arefu as their own personal amusement park. Oh, they're a fun bunch. I'd take a shot at them if I could but judging from what they did to the Brahmin, I wouldn't live long to tell about it.

Ken Ewers is a resident of Arefu in Fallout 3.

Background

Ewers is terrified of the current attacks that have been plaguing Arefu. He masks this by being incredibly short and gruff with strangers and will only impart the smallest tidbits of useless information to them. He is fiercely overprotective of his wife Brailee and will interpose himself if anyone even tries speaking with her. He is paranoid and lacks physical fighting skills.[1][2][3][4][Pub 1] At the moment all he cares about is his and his wife's lives,[5] and his wife's mental state.[6]

His wife's mentality was brought about by the combination of all the trouble around Arefu, living off a poor diet of prepackaged food and being confined to their home with her husband for long periods of time. In her delusion, she has compensated by creating a utopian world inside her mind.[Pub 2] Although he has grown dismissive of her mental state[7] he is rightfully concerned when she lets a stranger into their home believing them to be the mailman with the fall fashion catalog.[8] In her delusion, she believes that she is baking, however, she is usually breaking things about the house. Due to this, he has started to get better at fixing things around the home.[9]

After The Family began targeting Arefu for sustenance, and their culmination of the murder of the Brahmin, Evan King put the settlement into lockdown, leaving himself as the sole guard. Ewers does not believe that this will make them any safer and believes that they need to take action. He, however, follows what King tells him to do as the settlement's leader.[10][11][12][13][14] With the death of the elder Wests he will contemplate abandoning his home in Arefu to start anew someplace safer.[15]

Ken Ewers: "All I care about are two things. My life and my wife's life. Beyond that, I don't give two shits. If you need something, speak your piece and go."
    (Ken Ewers' dialogue)
  6. Lone Wanderer: "Why are you being so hostile?"
Ken Ewers: "Maybe it's because my wife has gone mental. No wait, I think it's because some lunatics are trying to kill us. Other than that, no reason."
    (Ken Ewers' dialogue)
  7. Ken Ewers: "Don't mind Brailee... she's in la la land again."

  9. Lone Wanderer: "Any help you can provide would be appreciated."
Ken Ewers: "Well, all I can do is offer my repair services to you. I'm pretty good with fixing stuff. That's usually because Brailee breaks everything thinking she's making a cake or something."
    (Ken Ewers' dialogue)
  10. Lone Wanderer: "Evan King told me to check on you. Is everything okay?"
Ken Ewers: "We're great. Just peachy. I love sitting in my house with my thumb up my ass. Tell Mr. King that sitting here all day isn't going to make us any safer. We need to take action!"
    (Ken Ewers' dialogue)
  11. Lone Wanderer: "So, what's your take on Evan King?"
Ken Ewers: "Well, he's town mayor or sheriff or whatever he calls himself. He calls all the shots. When he says to get the heck indoors and stay put, we do that."
    (Ken Ewers' dialogue)
  12. Lone Wanderer: "Can you tell me more about what's been going on around here?"
Ken Ewers: "Everyone is keeping themselves safe from the Family. If I was you, I'd do the same. You want to know more, talk to Evan King."
    (Ken Ewers' dialogue)
  13. Lone Wanderer: "What do you think about the Family?"
Ken Ewers: "They're lowlife scum who decided to use Arefu as their own personal amusement park. Oh, they're a fun bunch. I'd take a shot at them if I could but judging from what they did to the Brahmin, I wouldn't live long to tell about it."
    (Ken Ewers' dialogue)
  14. Lone Wanderer: "I'm looking for Ian West. Have you seen him?"
Ken Ewers: "Nope. Everyone stays inside, except Evan King of course."
    (Ken Ewers' dialogue)
  15. Lone Wanderer: "Did you know the Wests are dead?"
Ken Ewers: "Son of a bitch! I knew the Family were going to cross the line. It was only a matter of time. Maybe it's time I cut my losses and ran, but it just isn't fair. I made my home here, why should I have to leave?"
    (Ken Ewers' dialogue)
