For the random encounter in Fallout Tactics, see Canadian Invasion. |
The United States Annexation of Canada was an event that took place before the Great War.[1]
Background
The primary reason for the annexation was Canada's natural resources including wood cultivated from the Timberland forests, considered vital to the United States' ongoing military effort against China during the Resource Wars.[1][2] The decision was made after a long contentious relationship between the United States and Canadian governments that began after the Chinese invasion of Anchorage in the winter of 2066.[1][Pub 1]
Canadian officials had expressed opposition to United States troops traveling through their territory and airspace, and an attempt to sabotage the Alaskan pipeline "finally tipped the American military's hand."[1] In a statement to the Capitol Post on June 3, 2072, Buzz Babcock, commander of U.S. forces in Canada, cited security concerns regarding the pipeline incident as the justification.[1] He continued, announcing that effectively immediately, the United States military would begin "a complete takeover of all Canadian assets and resources" and referred to the country as "Little America."[1] To members of the United States military including Randall Clark, the act was criminal.[3]
Notes
- The Survivalist's Rifle's inscription reads "Long Branch Arsenal Ontario, USA Territory."
- Media such as Tales from the Front and Armor Ace and the Power Patrol depicted the annexation as a liberation.
- Vault-Tec advertised vaults in "newly-annexed Canada."[4]
- There is a special encounter in Fallout Tactics called "Canadian Invasion Recreationists." During this encounter, Clarisse will instruct a group to gather next to the American side of a line drawn on the ground.[5] She will then direct the group to walk across to the Canadian side of the line and once complete, the group gets drunk to celebrate.[6] She mentions that there is strong evidence that the Canadian army wore pink.[7]
- Another random encounter in Fallout Tactics is called Canadian Invasion, where a group is hostile to anyone who approaches, calling them "Canadian scum" and "devious," further commenting that Canada started the Great War.[8] When engaged in combat, they state that they "invaded your country once, and we'll do it again!"[9][10]
Behind the scenes
Several aspects of the annexation were included in Developer Statements, including the Anchorage frontline's desirous effects on Canada-United States relations, destruction of Canadian wilderness, and subsequent riots and protests undertaken by both Canadian and American citizens. With increasingly scarce oil reserves, a last deep-sea deposit below the Pacific Ocean was claimed by China before allegedly being sabotaged by American special operatives. Strained relationships spiraled downward into conflict as China marched on Alaska, and the Sino-American War of 2066—2077 erupted. Under the command of General Jingwei, the Chinese Army usurped control of Alaska's oil pipeline and reserves. In response, the Americans began what came to be called "The Alaskan Reclamation Operation" (2067—2077).
Under the leadership of General Constantine Chase, the U.S. Army battled fiercely to the front lines of the conflict before Chase began deploying specialized Power Armor units that began pushing the Chinese back. Future Power Armor suits were further refined as the conflict dragged on, and the Trans-Alaska Pipeline was reclaimed. With resources flowing through Canada, strained diplomatic tensions between Canada and the United States becoming problematic, and Canadian forces attacking the pipeline, the country was annexed."
