Another waste-baby, huh? Hey, kid, you want to know a secret?

Typhon is an old Ghoul and the son of Set living in Broken Hills in Fallout 2.[1]

Background

Described as an "old ghoul with intelligence fairly gleaming from his eyes,"[1] Typhon is the son of Set, former leader of Necropolis.[1][2] Born prior to the Great War, Typhon grew up as a Ghoul when the bombs dropped, stating that there's never been "any other way for [him]."[2][3] He describes his father as a "total bastard," stating that the radiation didn't do much for his "sense of humor or sense of authority."[3] While the radiation from the bombs "screwed up everyone's brains," he says that growing up as a Ghoul made it easier on him.[3]

In his "running days," Typhon competed and won races, making a sizable amount of Caps from it.[4] He later stashed his winnings inside the well at the Broken Hills Downtown district, as it wasn't "likely to be torn down or plowed over."[5] In Broken Hills, he resides at the Old Ghoul's Home where old ghouls can "rest for a while."[6]

Other interactions

  • Typhon will tell the Chosen One of their "running days," mentioning that he stashed his sizable earnings in town. He will tell the player the location after bringing various items in successive order:
    • He will ask for a Cat's Paw. After giving one to him, he instructs the player to wait 1 hour before speaking to him again.
    • After this, he will ask for a Rubber Doll and suggests finding one at New Reno. After giving one to him, he instructs the player to wait 3 hours before speaking to him again.
    • After this, he will ask for a bottle of Rot Gut and suggests buying from Phil at the town bar. After giving one to him, he will reveal the location of his stash "somewhere downtown."
  • The player is rewarded 5 reputation points for Broken Hills and 2000 XP. Typhon's stash can be found in the well in the middle of Broken Hills Downtown. The Chosen One can inspect the well, revealing the stash tied to a brick via a rope before it falls into the well. Micky can be enlisted to enter the well and retrieve the stash, revealing it to be Bottlecaps which are no longer used as currency.
    • If Typhon is confronted about this, he will apologize. If the player forgives him, they will be granted 3 Karma points. This does not apply if the player responds with "Yeah, well, you made your last mistake, old ghoul. Time to die." or "Yeah, yeah. Okay. Bye."

    • Seymour will ask if they could play with Typhon's suit of Power Armor one day, with Typhon responding with "You mean that old suit I keep in the closet?"[8]
    • Seymour will mention a philosophical dead-end, with Typhon replying with "That's only because you haven't examined all the ramifications of it. Now, if you..."[9]
    • Typhon will ask if Seymour would like to be read a story, with Seymour replying with "How about The Giving Tree? Jack and the Beanstalk? Catcher in the Rye?"[10]

  2. 2.0 2.1 Chosen One: "Who are you?"
Typhon: "I'm Typhon. Y'ever hear of Set? He used to run the old-time town of Necropolis. I'm his son. Got born before the radiation hit us, so I grew up mutated. Ain't never been any other way for me."
    (Typhon's dialogue)
  3. 3.0 3.1 3.2 Chosen One: "Set? I heard he was a total bastard!"
Typhon: "Total bastard" would be a fine way to describe the old man. Being turned into a ghoul from the radiation didn't do much for his sense of humor or sense of authority, let me tell you. 'Course, it kinda screwed up everyone's brains. I think growing up ghoulie made it a little easier on me."
    (Typhon's dialogue)
  4. Typhon: "Back in my running days, I won quite a few races, made quite a bit of cash. Long time ago, I stashed all of my winnings not too far from here. If someone was t'do me a favor or two, I might tell 'em where that "treasure" is."
    (Typhon's dialogue)
  5. Typhon: "All right. I remember stashing the cash somewhere downtown. It's been so many years, though, and the buildings have been built and rebuilt over and over, that I'm not sure exactly where it is. If it helps any, I remember thinkin' I should put it somewhere that wasn't likely to be torn down or plowed over. Somewhere indispensible, ya' know? Good luck to you."
    (Typhon's dialogue)
  6. Chosen One: "Old Ghouls' Home?"
Typhon: "It's kind of a joke. There ain't any ghouls but old ghouls. We're all sterile, see, but we're incredibly long-lived. We're the first and last generation of ghouls. This is a place for those of us who just wanna rest for a while."
    (Typhon's dialogue)
  7. Seymour: "But Hegel's dialectic doesn't account for..."
Typhon: "Hegel, Hegel, Hegel! You're always on about Hegel!"
    (Typhon and Seymour's dialogue)
  8. Seymour: "Can I play with your power armor someday?"
Typhon: "You mean that old suit I keep in the closet? Tee hee..."
    (Typhon and Seymour's dialogue)
  9. Seymour: "But it's completely apparent that this is a philosophical dead end!"
Typhon: "That's only because you haven't examined all the ramifications of it. Now, if you..."
    (Typhon and Seymour's dialogue)
  10. Typhon: "Want me to read you a story?"
Seymour: "How about The Giving Tree? Jack and the Beanstalk? Catcher in the Rye?"
