Protectrons are robots found in the Mojave Wasteland and at Big MT in Fallout: New Vegas.

Background

The RobCo Protectron was constructed for civil service applications, such as security to firefighting.[1] The robot is described as sturdy, used before the Great War as a "security automaton in both the private and business sectors."[2]

The Protectron has three photo sensors capable of sight and is powered by a fission batter, located behind an access panel.[3][4] Protectrons came with a special pod where it could be stored. The Standard Protectron Control Interface v2.40 was installed on terminals connected to the pod.

The introduction of the Protectron impacted workers in the United States as the automation displaced them from jobs.[5] Labor strikes resulted in violence between the robots and displaced human employees.[6][7]

Variants

RobCo offered construction variants designed to withstand damage that came equipped with an internal nail gun.[8] Firefighter models were equipped with an internal cryo gun for utilization in combat.[9] Medic models were designed to use its hands as defibrillators, or as a shock weapon in combat.[10] Police units also used shock attacks.[11] Protectrons could be used to cook food with their internal temperatures reaching 1000 degrees.[12]

Other variants included office robots running the R04 V9 "Office Helper" personality[13] with integrated office protocols and scheduling software,[14] RS3 V4.1.6 "Utility Helper"[15] with remote maintenance routine download capability[16] and pest extermination programs,[17] and the RX2 V1.16.4 "Vault Helper"[18] with Vault protocols.[19]

Some Protectrons have been programmed with distinct personalities, such as Fisto, Primm Slim, and Vendortron. A prototype Protectron was called the Protect-O-Bot, displayed at the REPCONN Headquarters museum.

Gameplay

Protectrons have about the same amount of health as an average human combatant but are much slower. Their metal bodies provide them with a decent amount of protection; a DT of 8. They are equipped with a series of three built-in laser emitters, mounted in their right and left "hands," as well as the glowing dome atop their head.

They have three laser weapons built into their frame, one in each arm and another one in their head. The individual firepower in its laser weapons is greater than a Laser Rifle. Like most robots, the Protectron has a combat inhibitor on its back. Crippling this part of the robot will cause it to frenzy and start attacking all targets indiscriminately.

Locations

  • A handful of Protectrons can be found guarding a chamber in the basement of the HELIOS One control tower, just in front of the elevator leading up to the mainframe deck.
  • Depending on the player character's level, some Protectrons may be part of the robotic execution force inside the Vault 11 sacrificial chamber.
  • Protectrons guard Mr. House's secret bunker under the Fort. They can be deactivated by hacking a Hard locked terminal.
  • A few Protectrons guard the inside of the H&H Tools factory.
  • Three deactivated Protectrons are on display inside the Lucky 38 penthouse, including the Nuka-Cola variant.
  • Several construction variants can be found in the construction site in Big MT including the unique variant, construction drone foreman.

Named

Notes

  • The Protectrons of Fallout: New Vegas have a smoother, more automatic voice than those of Fallout 3.
  • Just like the Sentry Bots, the Protectron has a melee function implemented but does not use it in close combat.
  • A collectible model of the Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas Protectron can be found in Fallout 4.

Appearances

Protectrons appear in Fallout: New Vegas.

Behind the scenes

The Art of Fallout 3 states that during development, Emil Pagliarulo's input on every robot was to "make it more like Robby the Robot." The protectron's original design went through many iterations before artists settled on a design that has "the vintage character of Robby" and that "captures the quintessential 1950's robot character more than any other."[20]
