Mister Gutsy (Fallout 76)

FO76 publicteam xpd.pngFor a cross-game overview, see Mister Gutsy.

Nothing I like better than a little R and R on Uncle Sam's dime.

Mister Gutsies are robots found in Appalachia.

Background

A dedicated combat variant of their civilian Mister Handy, the Mister Gutsy series was developed by General Atomics International.[1][2] It was commissioned by the United States Army before the Great War,[3] with units utilized during Battle of Anchorage in January 2077. It is equipped weapons such as 10mm submachine guns, .44 pistols, plasma weapons and flamethrowers.[4]

General Atomics programmed the robots to be effective soldiers, but the definitions utilized were vague, causing issues with simulated personality units.[5] The robot has the ability to refuse orders issued by commanders they deemed incompetent or those under court martial.[6][7] Units were designated with "ABC" and "MGZ" serial numbers and different variants included Mister, Sergeant, Lieutenant, Major, and Colonel. A field medic model was also created, which was incapable of combat and an encyclopedic knowledge of medical procedures, particularly surgery.[8][Pub 1]

Gameplay

Mister Gutsy robots are frequently encountered alongside other robotic enemies, typically serving as a boss-type enemy at lower levels and eventually replacing weaker robotic enemies at higher levels.

At higher levels, the damage capabilities of Mister Gutsy robots drastically increase, as they can spawn with ballistic weaponry. Their three arms can be equipped with different weapons, with the left arm being able to hold either a .44 pistol, combat rifle or a laser gun. The right arm may utilize a .44 pistol, combat rifle, or a buzz saw, whereas the middle arm is limited to a laser gun only.

Should all their arms be destroyed, leaving them with no remaining weaponry to attack with, they will set their internal power cores to go critical and charge player characters to kill them with the resulting explosion. Legendary variants still detonate, even if they are killed before attempting a self-destruct attack.

Locations

  • Camp McClintock - A U.S. Army training camp before the War. As part of the automation efforts, the majority of its human staff was replaced with Mister Gutsies, including Sergeant Gutsies. One stationed here reverted to its Misty Handy programming and started landscaping the grounds.[9]

Tinker Joe: "Of course you would, of course! Well, it just happens that I've got a beaut of a deal on this customized Gutsy. And it's not just "Mister" Gutsy - he's a full fledged sergeant! "Sergeant RL-3" to be precise, the pride of General Atomics International. Comes complete with a simulated personality unit, so he's good protection and good company, too! And all yours for just 1000 caps."
The Lone Wanderer: "Simulated personality? Sounds like trouble."
Tinker Joe: "To tell the truth, it is a little trouble. But he can't help the way he got built. General Atomics programmed the Mister Gutsy to be a good soldier, but their definitions were a bit vague. So a lot of units had... issues. So we got a gung-ho, robotic soldier that's picky about the company he keeps. But he seems to like you, so it'll be fine."

  6. Lone Wanderer: "Time to head back into the fight, RL-3."
Sergeant RL-3: "Sir, I regret to inform you that this unit cannot accept orders from an irresponsible officer!"

  8. Lone Wanderer: "Say, could I reprogram you to kill people?"
Sawbones: "Negative. The Mister Gutsy field medic model is incapable of harming human beings through intentional action."

Recently, Sawbones has been exhibiting some worrying behavior, including having a penchant for poetry."
