The Inventory is the place where the protagonist stores the items that they pick up during their travels.

Fallout and Fallout 2

The Inventory looks and works the same in both games. At any time, it can be opened by either pressing the "i" key or by clicking on the INV button on the interface bar at the bottom. The Inventory can be closed by hitting the "Escape" key or by left-clicking on the "Done" button. While in combat, accessing the Inventory costs four Action Points, this can be reduced to one Action Point when having all three ranks of the Quick Pockets perk.

Items can be placed by holding the left mouse button and dragging them into either the Armor slot or one of the two Item slots. Some items, such as aid and consumables, can also be used directly from the Inventory, by switching to the command cursor (right-clicking once) and then holding the left mouse button while being over an item, which gives several options, such as inspecting, using or dropping the item - with weapons also having an option to unload the ammunition in them.

The item order can only be changed by either dropping items to the ground and picking them up again in the desired order, or by storing and re-taking them from a container. When bartering with an NPC, the Inventories are placed side by side. The Highwayman in Fallout 2 uses the same Inventory interface.

Fallout Tactics

At any time, the Inventory can be opened by either pressing the "i" key or by clicking on the INV button on the right side of the interface bar at the bottom. It can be closed by hitting the "Escape" key or by left-clicking on the "Done" button. Unlike in the first two games, accessing the Inventory costs no Action Points, regardless of whether being in combat or not. However, actions taken in the inventory will reduce available Action Points, the cost of which can be halved by taking the Quick Pockets perk.

The Inventory's design received a slight overhaul. Items can now be dragged to their appropriate slot or onto the ground by simply holding and releasing the left mouse button, with information about an item being obtainable by left-clicking it once. While the Armor slot is still part of the inventory, the two Item slots have been removed and placed directly on the interface bar at the bottom. A quality of life improvement is a sorting tab above the inventory, which allows for the inventory to show only select items belonging to one of the following categories:

The item order can be changed by either dropping items to the ground and picking them up again in the desired order, or by storing and re-taking them from a container, with newly obtained items always appearing in the top-left slot of the Inventory. When bartering with an NPC, the Inventories are placed side by side. While sitting in a usable vehicle, items can be safely deposited inside, by opening the Inventory interface.

Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel

The Inventory can be opened by pressing the "Select" button on PlayStation 2 or the "Back" button on Xbox, opening it pauses the game. It is separated into three different sections; Weapons, Armor and Items. From here, items can be equipped, used or dropped - the latter is not possible for quest-related items.

The item order can be changed by dropping items to the ground and picking them up again in the desired order, with newly obtained items always appearing at the bottom of the list in the corresponding Inventory section. Bartering with NPCs uses the same Inventory interface, but two separate Inventory lists - one for the player and one for the vendor.

Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas

The Inventory can be accessed by bringing up the Pip-Boy ("Tabulator" key on PC, "B" button on Xbox360 and "O" on PlayStation 3) and selecting the Item section, which has five tabs; Weapons, Apparel, Aid, Misc and Ammo. Items in these tabs are automatically listed in numeric and alphabetic order, and can be changed or used at will.

The Inventory interface is mostly the same for both games, except for three changes in Fallout: New Vegas:

  • Instead of the DR it displays the DT in the upper section.
  • In the Weapons tab, it has an additional key for applying mods to weapons.
  • In the Ammo tab, different types of the same caliber can be selected here, which allows for easy ammo cycling with a hotkey from the HUD.

Fallout Shelter

The Inventory of each Vault Dwellers consists of a slot for Weapon, Armor and a Pet, each of which has to be manually assigned with items available from the Storage room. It also has slots for Stimpaks and RadAway, which are automatically filled by whatever amount of them is currently stored in the Vault.

When sending out a Vault Dweller to explore the Wasteland, up to 25 Stimpaks and RadAway can be manually added to their Inventory. While exploring, they may find up to 100 items, ranging from weapons and armor to Junk Items, all of which are automatically assigned to the Vault Dweller and are moved to the Storage room after their return to the Vault.

Fallout 4

The Inventory can be accessed by bringing up the Pip-Boy ("Tabulator" key on PC, "B" button on XboxOne and "O" on PlayStation 4) and selecting the INV section, which has seven tabs; Weapons, Apparel, Aid, Misc, Junk, Mods and Ammo. Items in these tabs are automatically listed in numeric and alphabetic order, and can be changed or used at will.

Fallout 76

The Inventory can be accessed by bringing up the Pip-Boy ("Tabulator" key on PC, "B" button on XboxOne and "O" on PlayStation 4) and selecting the ITEM section, which has twelve tabs; New, Weapons, Armor, Apparel, Food/Drink, Aid, Misc, Holo, Notes, Junk, Mods and Ammo. Items in these tabs are automatically listed in numeric and alphabetic order, and can be changed or used at will.
