China was a pre-War Communist country.[1]
Background
The country was once ruled by Emperor Qin Shih Huang, who was buried in a tomb protected by thousands of terracotta warriors.[2] Chinese mythology includes folklore about Youkai, the spirits of mistreated animals that become demons.[3]
Before the Great War, the country led the world in uranium mining.[4] The country's space program competed with the United States and the Soviet Union with the goal of being the first to send astronauts into space. In 1961, the United States announced Captain Carl Bell was the first to do so, a claim that both the Soviet Union and China refuted.[5] The country was led by President Xin and Chairman Cheng before the war, and Xiu-Ling served as ambassador to the United States.[6]
Resource Wars
The unstable global economy caused by reliance on these finite resources caused a series of conflicts involving China.[7] In 2073, the United States claimed the world's last remaining supply of oil, resulting in President Xin stating that the Chinese drilling platform project was planned for completion months prior, but was sabotaged by the United States.[8] Xin formally requested an international panel to investigate.[8] Following the incident, military exercises staged by the Chinese fleet were reported as "unacceptably close" to United States strategic oil reserves, and the Chinese government denied any hostile intentions.[8] The nation utilized a satellite network to transmit communications that were monitored by Americans at Black Mountain.[9]
Invasion of Anchorage
Chairman Cheng's forces invaded the United States in the winter of 2066, landing in the seaport of Anchorage, Alaska.[10] Their forces included warships that shelled the base and soldiers that occupied the city.[11][12] The United States issued a declaration of war on China following the invasion.[13] Entries written in Anchorage terminals are written in formal Mandarin and Guanhuà Chinese.[14] Chinese forces occupied the city for 10 years until their defeat at the Battle of Anchorage on January 10, 2077.[10]
During this time, under Executive Order 99066, Chinese-American citizens were taken from their homes, placed in concentration camps without trial, and transported by private security contractors.[15][16] Those suspected of spying for the Chinese were interrogated to death at institutions such as the Turtledove Detention Camp.[17][18][19] Many citizens disappeared and were subjected to experiments at research facilities across the United States.[20] Little Yangtze was one of these pre-War concentration camps, the citizens there described as "guineas" and that it "may be merciful if war did break out, put an end to this chain of horrors."[21][22]
Chinese operatives infiltrated Canada and the United States, running interference, gathering intel, or posing as defectors.[23][24] Agent Yang executed the Niagara Sabotage, escaping from prisoner transport thereafter.[25] Ration lotteries were provided as a means of payment for successful missions, and Chinese officers carried swords with intricate grips, prized as trophies by American service members.[26][27][28] Automated correspondence outlining objectives was sent to agents by the Chinese Intelligence Ministry.[27]
The People's Bank of Point Lookout instructed their employees not to exchange Chinese Yuan notes by request of Civil Defense.[29] United States citizens were encouraged to report anyone who may be sympathetic or supportive of the Chinese war effort by way of the Vigilant Citizen's Hotline.[30][31] Poseidon Energy publishes propaganda warning against talking about their work, stating that the information would reach Chinese agents posing as American operators, resulting in China "sitting at the controls" of the United States' entire arsenal.[32]

Post-War
- The Shi inhabitants of San Francisco are the descendants of the Shih-huang-ti crew, a submarine that washed ashore following the Great War. The survivors salvaged the submarine's supercomputer, referred to as the Emperor. Chinatown is a section of San Francisco.
- In the Capital Wasteland, Chinese remnants can be found at Broadcast Tower KT8 and Mama Dolce's. The People's Republic of America Radio is a broadcast from Chinese Radio Beacons heard throughout the region.
- Simulated Chinese combatants are programmed into both the Tranquility Lane and Anchorage Reclamation Simulations.
- In Point Lookout, the Chinese covert submarine SSN-37-1A is stranded off the coast.
- Vault Dwellers will comment that they would like to visit the Great Wall of China, and believe it is still standing.[33]
- Small pre-War drones called Liberators are still active in Appalachia and Vault Dwellers can find plush teddy bears named Imported Chinese Pandas and Comrade Chubs.
