Groovy, my guts are leakin' out. People in the Brotherhood say I'm too harsh, too violent... Funny thing is.... they're right. Nothing can stop me!— Cain in a trailer for the game

Cain is a possible player character in Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel and one of three possible choices to be the Initiate, the others being Cyrus and Nadia.

Background

When his home, Necropolis, was razed to the ground by the super mutants, Cain took it personally. In an attempt to seek vengeance upon the mutants, he sought out the Brotherhood of Steel and demanded entry. He was finally given a test of initiation, a suicide mission that should he survive would allow him to become one of the first ghouls ever to join the ranks of the Brotherhood.[1][2][3]

Publications

As a mercenary, Cain is a ghoul through and through. Stooped, skeletal and bony, Cain is a real badass, the kind of guy that upon finding your burning body would roast desert rat over you rather than put you out. As a somewhat isolationist and anti-mutant order, the Brotherhood was reluctant to grant him admission, but Cain’s perseverance was fueled with a grim determination. Cain is a Ghoul. He was once a man, but was severely disfigured by radiation poisoning. He became sickly thin, skeletal in appearance. And the changes were more than skin deep. Cain became a merciless, tough-as-nails mercenary, fighting for the highest bidder. But when an army of mutants destroyed his home, the only payment Cain would seek was vengeance. He approached the Brotherhood, but they were reticent to open their ranks to a Ghoul. Behind closed doors, the Brotherhood decided to send Cain on a suicide mission for the order. They figured he would never succeed. But within Cain beats the heart of a killer, and that's just the kind of man this mission calls for.Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel Official Strategy Guide

Traits

Once he has gained the Rad Child skill, he heals himself when in contact with radioactive substances.[1] Due to his skills Butcher and Pyromaniac, he excels at using bladed and fire-based weapons.

Notes

  • Cain is the only playable ghoul in the Fallout universe apart from ghoul recruits in Fallout Tactics.
  • Cain's only line in game is "See you in hell!", and the lines in his trailer are never used.
  • If playing as Cain, some characters will comment on his status as a ghoul.
    • Ruby will be reluctant to having sex with Cain if asked, saying, "Well, sure... I guess so... Hey, what are you doing?" and "Uh, I think I'm gonna be sick..."
    • Armpit comments that ghouls can hold their liquor well, even if their guts fall out.
    • Jesse is unsure if Cain is a ghoul, saying, "Either you're a ghoul or someone set fire to your face and put it out with a rake."
    • Richard is either unsure if Cain is a ghoul or does not want to intimidate Cain by mentioning it, saying, "You... you're a ghoul! I didn't know... please... I meant no offense! Take these! Just... just don't touch me!" Richard will give Cain 50 caps. Cain threatens Richard, saying he won't eat his brains for now.
    • The Vault Dweller says "Heard your name's Cain, just like the first murderer, the brother-killer."[4] They also share a conversation about Necropolis, as both have been there.
    • Harold is interested that the Brotherhood is letting ghouls join their ranks and comments on both of them being mutated, mentioning, "We may be butt-ugly on the outside, but some of us still got a pair!" Cain replies, "Yeah, I'm proud to represent ghouls everywhere and shit."
    • Ching Tsun calls Cain a creature and says he wishes to study his physiology.

  4. Vault Dweller: "I had a name once... but not any more. Heard your name's Cain, just like the first murderer, the brother-killer. Do you think of other ghouls as your brothers? Have you killed any brothers lately?"
