I'd like to be free, but I'm not. And the harder I cling to that idea, the more miserable I'll be that I'm stuck here. And this work is hard enough without extra misery. Speaking of which, I should get back to it.

Adan is a slave worker living in the Pitt in the Fallout 3 add-on The Pitt.

Background

Adan considers the other slaves to be his family, and has arranged himself with his place in life.[1][2]

Publications

A Pitt Slave for as long as he can remember, Adan (pronounced “A-din”) is one of the few Steel Saw wielders content with his lot in life. This is partly due to the philosophical texts he reads when visiting Midea at her quarters. Fate has given him this life, and he must make the best of it.Fallout 3 Official Game Guide/Wasteland Census

Notes

  • His discolored and patchy skin indicates that he is infected with Troglodyte Degeneration Contagion, like most other Pitt slaves.
  • He spends his days in front of the entrance to the Mill, sawing away at a destroyed bus with his steel saw.
  • He dies during the quest Free Labor, with his body being found in the same location as before.

Quotes

  • "It's a shame that violence is the only thing that could solve this."
  • "I'm not cheery, really. I've just accepted my role here. I found a book once. Midea read part of it to me. It said: "The Master doesn't try to be powerful; he is powerful. An ordinary man keeps reaching for power and thus never has enough.""
  • "I'd like to be free, but I'm not. And the harder I cling to that idea, the more miserable I'll be that I'm stuck here. And this work is hard enough without extra misery. Speaking of which, I should get back to it."

Appearances

Adan appears in the Fallout 3 add-on The Pitt.

Behind the scenes

The two mentioned quotes from the book are associated with ancient Chinese philosopher Laozi and his text Tao Te Ching.
